DIY trellis: a reliable support for plants

Caring for plants in the country means not only watering, fertilizing and pruning, but also gartering the plants, creating special supports for proper growth and fruiting. Paying attention to this fact, today we are talking about how to make trellis with your own hands.

It is worth noting that almost every summer resident on the site has trellis, and they are strictly independent production, because none of us is interested in enriching resellers, if everything can be done independently.

Why trellis for plants is needed

Tapestry - a special stand, frame or support for curly and growing crops. Thanks to it, the stems of plants do not break, do not bind, do not dry out and are not trampled. Moreover, with the help of such devices it is possible to ensure constant ventilation of plants, as well as to improve the convenience of caring for them (pruning, treatment from diseases and pests, formation).

In addition, the constructions are used in order to give the plant the right direction of development, which is convenient not for him, by nature, namely the summer resident, who focuses on the collection of a certain crop.

Types of trellis for cottages

These devices can be made independently or purchased, but the materials of their production remain almost identical. For the most part, “home” trellises for summer cottages are made of wood, wood and wire, most often purchased from steel rods and plastic.

Designs can be divided not only by type of production materials, but also by direction and purpose, for example, for the cultivation of which crops they were created. Most often, they can be classified as follows: trellis for grapes, for vegetables, for flowers.

Today we will look at several types of trellis and talk about how to make them yourself in order to save a little.

DIY grape support

The most optimal design for growing grapes is considered to be a vertical trellis, which consists of vertical posts made of solid wood, and several rows of steel wire, along which the grapes will rise up. Such a trellis is made quite simply by installing poles at a distance of 3-3.5 m from each other, their reliable strengthening and tension of the wire.

Under the grapes, you can use a double, or rather, two-sided trellis, which is also called two-plane. It is installed in approximately the same way as the standard one, but it is made of metal rods or fittings, as it will withstand more weight. But, to spend time and big money on the production of such structures are decided only by entrepreneurs who are professionally engaged in viticulture. At the dacha, trellis or pergolas are enough, and in some cases a solid arch in the area of the recreation area.

DIY trellis for flowers

By and large, there will be no difficulties in their manufacture, especially if there is a standard tool for their manufacture in the country house, the simplest materials and some skills.

You will need a hammer, pliers, a hacksaw, nails or bolts with nuts, a hacksaw for metal or a grinder, in more complex cases, and a welding machine. From the materials we will determine wooden bars, mounting strips or the like, steel wire, metal fittings, PVC pipes.

Naturally, we could forget something, but we will definitely notice this in a consistent description of creation.

So, we will consider several types of support for flowers in the garden.

Do-it-yourself trellis for clematis

For high-quality, beautiful and original flower cultivation, trellis is needed. At least, it will be easier to arrange a garden with the help of clematis, to organize a hedge, to braid a gazebo and so on.

First of all, we choose wooden blocks for the base of the structure, which, say, will be installed along the fence of the summer cottage. Ordinary is a fence or an expensive fence made of stone, it is not particularly important, the main thing is that we will partially decorate it.

Choosing the bars for the base, we make the correct marking on them ... here you can not really pay attention to accuracy, because if the trellis is 1-2 cm higher or lower, this will not play any role. And pay attention to the fact that the bases of this element must be well fixed, that is, dug in, which means that we add 40-50 cm to the required size, which will go into the ground. Total, if we are going to install trellises under the clematis with a height of 160 cm, then we will need a beam of 200-210 cm. These are the bases, the distances between which will be about one and a half meters. It is this distance that we need to sew up with a mounting strip. This can be done figuratively (with rhombuses or irregular geometric shapes) or standardly, so to speak, in a box. This is where a hacksaw, a hammer and nails come in handy.

Trellis can be done on the ground, finding a solid base and knocking it together, or at the installation site, driving the base into the ground, and only then proceed to sewing the inside.

After its installation next to the planted plants, it is advisable to treat the product with special protective agents.

DIY trellis for roses

Here, we immediately want to recall the material that we offered you some time ago, when we described in detail the creation of a greenhouse from pipes. We have a similar project today, and for the construction of trellises for roses in the garden, we also want to use fittings and plastic pipes.

Initially, we take measurements and markup of the material, then, be sure to add the length to each element, because a certain part will be attached by digging into the ground. Now that the dimensions are taken, you have determined the trellis bend and inserted the fittings into the pipes, you can bend them in such a way as to get the element we need. They will need at least two.

Having installed our curved elements (bases) in the right place, parallel and strictly according to plan, we make horizontal jumpers, so to speak, stiffeners that will increase stability and become special “rose holders”. What we did, you can look at the photos below.

DIY trellis for cucumbers

If you are a fan of environmentally friendly vegetables, then you should definitely take care of the future harvest, and therefore, create a reliable trellis from improvised materials. We will use everything that was before, but just add to the arsenal of necessary things a special PVC net for growing cucumbers.

Everyone already knows perfectly well that the support for cucumbers is simple - two wooden posts and a net in an interference fit between them. But there is a certain feature that spoils life for many of us at the time of ripening of cucumbers - the stem and fruits gain weight, the greens pull the net lower, it sags and spoils itself or even spoils the whole bush. To prevent such troubles from happening, it is necessary not only to pull the grid between the columns that you installed, but also to pull up its top. This can be done through a horizontal jumper, which should be fixed to the posts securely, thus forming a U-shaped structure with a PVC mesh inside. That's it, now the cucumber will stretch up and its weight will not be able to tear or stretch the trellis.

Do-it-yourself trellis for tomatoes

Creating a support for tomatoes with your own hands, you should understand that this is the simplest support of the bush (but tomatoes can also be tied up). Similarly, you can make a trellis for raspberries with your own hands, and for many other plants that just need to hold up the growing stem.

Of course, making a do-it-yourself pedestal for tomatoes can be even more difficult if, for example, you want to put up jumpers inside a structure or pull on a PVC net, but it all depends on the variety of tomatoes and the need for such actions.

In our simplest case, it’s enough to take an ordinary strong twig and insert it next to a tomato bush, or to do the same with a wooden rail, which will guide and hold the bush throughout its life in a greenhouse or garden.

Trellis processing, preparation and protection

An important quality of the finished structure is durability, otherwise next year work and waste will be repeated.

First of all, for the manufacture of trellis from wood, you should choose a durable material - oak, ash, chestnut, mulberry, and try not to use birch, poplar and maple. Not suitable for creating such elements and wet wood.

Further, we surely treat products with antiseptics and atmospheric protection, for example, even drying oil, and the lower part of each pillar of the base with solid oil, resin or even oil working out to extend the life of the tree in the ground.

It is worth noting that metal elements in such structures will require painting, and PVC elements do not need to be processed.

Thus, the trellises in the garden and in the garden are prepared for a long service, but so that the work does not go to waste, do not forget to provide the structures and proper care at the end of the season. Be sure to make a quality cleaning of debris and dried stems and leaves, etching from diseases of plants and insects, good drying, and further storage in a dry and dark room, until spring.

To make a support under the grapes with your own hands or to create a nice trellis for flowers is not difficult at all, the main thing is the desire to get a good harvest or to see your summer house blooming, the rest depends only on the desire to work with your hands.
